It has excellent forming and welding characteristics. The balanced austenitic structure of grade 304 enables deep drawing without intermediate annealing, which makes this grade dominant in the manufacture of drawn stainless steel parts such as sinks, hollowware, and pans. For these applications, a special "304DDQ" (Depth Drawing Quality) variant is usually used. Grade 304 is easily braked or rolled into a variety of components for industrial, construction and transportation applications. Grade 304 also has excellent welding characteristics. Post-weld annealing is not required when welding thin sections. Grade 304L is a low carbon version of 304 that does not require post weld annealing and is therefore widely used for heavy duty components (about 6mm+). The higher carbon grade 304H can be used at high temperatures. The austenitic structure also gives these grades excellent toughness, even at low temperatures.
